Green Hydrogen Supply for Oil Refineries

Refineries are among the largest industrial hydrogen consumers. Replacing steam methane reforming with on-site alkaline electrolysis powered by renewables requires the most efficient membranes available.

Reduce Scope 1 Emissions

On-site green hydrogen from IONZERA-equipped electrolysers directly replaces SMR-derived grey hydrogen, cutting refinery Scope 1 CO2 emissions from hydrogen production.

Continuous High-Volume Operation

Refinery hydrogen demand is continuous and large-volume. IONZERA's mechanical strength and chemical stability support the 24/7, high-utilization operation that refineries require.

Compatible with Existing Infrastructure

Hydrogen from alkaline electrolysis integrates with existing refinery hydrogen networks after standard purification, requiring no modifications to downstream hydrotreating or hydrocracking units.

Hydrogen in Petroleum Refining

Oil refineries consume approximately 38 million tonnes of hydrogen per year globally, primarily for hydrotreating (removing sulfur from fuels) and hydrocracking (converting heavy fractions to lighter products). Nearly all of this hydrogen comes from steam methane reforming (SMR), which produces 9-12 kg of CO2 per kg of H2.

As refineries face increasingly stringent emissions regulations and carbon pricing, replacing SMR with on-site electrolysis powered by renewable electricity offers a direct path to reducing the carbon intensity of refinery operations. The economics of this transition depend critically on the efficiency of the electrolyser, and therefore on the membrane.

IONZERA for Refinery-Scale Electrolysis

Refinery hydrogen applications have specific requirements that IONZERA is well-positioned to address:

High-volume continuous operation demands membranes with consistent performance and long operational life
IONZERA's 2.7 MPa tensile strength ensures mechanical reliability during sustained operation at elevated pressures
The 3x lower area resistance means lower electricity cost per kg of H2, critical when competing against low-cost natural gas-based SMR
Mesh-free manufacturing supports the large membrane volumes needed for multi-hundred MW refinery electrolyser installations

Transition Pathway for Refiners

The transition from grey to green hydrogen in refineries can be phased, starting with partial hydrogen replacement to gain operational experience before full SMR decommissioning. IONZERA's competitive pricing and availability from G-Hexa in India support both initial pilot installations and full-scale rollout, with technical support throughout the transition.
