Our NiCo Electrode for Power-to-Gas

Power-to-gas systems convert surplus renewable electricity into hydrogen (and downstream synthetic methane) for long-duration energy storage. Our bifunctional NiCo electrode in an AEM cell with a commercial Zirfon separator delivers 91.4% energy efficiency at 0.5 A/cm2 at 60 deg C.

Round-trip efficiency improves with cell efficiency

Every percentage point of electrolyzer efficiency carries through to round-trip storage efficiency. 91.4% at 0.5 A/cm2 with bifunctional NiCo and commercial Zirfon is the published baseline.

Why P2G needs efficient electrolyzers

Power-to-gas systems store renewable energy by converting surplus electricity into hydrogen (or further to synthetic methane). When the grid needs it back, the gas is reconverted or burned. The round-trip efficiency of such a system is the product of the electrolyzer's efficiency on the forward path and the conversion efficiency back to electricity.

Our bifunctional NiCo electrode on Ni foam (100 to 1000 cm2), electroless-deposited, operates as both HER cathode and OER anode at 80 mV and 260 mV overpotential at 100 mA/cm2 in 30 wt% KOH (no IR correction). In an AEM cell with a commercial Zirfon separator (500 um), 0.5 A/cm2 is reached at 1.62 V at 60 deg C (91.4% efficiency).

Variable-load envelope for P2G

P2G systems run when surplus power is available, idle when it is not. Our bifunctional NiCo electrode was tested with PV-derived current schedules for 9 continuous days (peaks ~570 mA/cm2). No major changes were observed across the 9 cycles.

Wind-derived schedules for 100 hours (0 to 0.78 A/cm2) were also applied to the same cell with commercial Zirfon separator. Linear-sweep polarization curves before and after the 100-hour wind run differ by 20 mV at 0.5 A/cm2.

1000-hour run for utility-scale P2G

Utility-scale P2G installations expect multi-year service intervals. The 1000-hour run on bifunctional NiCo and commercial Zirfon at 0.5 A/cm2 and 40 deg C in 30 wt% KOH showed 21 uV/hr voltage drift. ΔV before/after LSV at 0.5 A/cm2: 30 mV.

Sizing for grid integration

P2G installations sized for grid services typically need many MW of electrolyzer capacity. Our bifunctional NiCo electrode is supplied on Ni foam in the 100 to 1000 cm2 size range, suitable for both single-cell qualification and pilot-stack assembly. Bench-scale validation at 5 cm2 matches the size used in our published test cell.

Combine with separator and balance-of-plant

A complete P2G stack needs the electrode, the separator, the cell frames, current collectors, and gas-handling systems. The published numbers used a commercial Zirfon separator (500 um) as the membrane reference. We also offer IONZERA, our own next-generation separator, as a sibling product that can be evaluated independently.

Frequently asked questions

Why use a bifunctional NiCo electrode for power-to-gas energy storage?

Our bifunctional NiCo electrode operates as both HER cathode and OER anode at 80 mV and 260 mV overpotential at 100 mA/cm² in 30 wt% KOH (no IR correction). For power-to-gas energy storage, using a single electrode SKU on both sides simplifies stack BOM and qualification.

What cell-level performance is published?

In a 5 cm² AEM cell with bifunctional NiCo electrode on both sides and a commercial Zirfon separator (500 µm) at zero-gap, the cell logs 0.5 A/cm² at 1.81 V at room temperature (82% efficiency) and 1.62 V at 60 °C (91.4%). At 1.0 A/cm²: 2.05 V at RT and 1.79 V at 60 °C.

What is the stability baseline?

Continuous 1000-hour chronopotentiometry at 0.5 A/cm² and 40 °C in 30 wt% KOH (bifunctional NiCo electrode on both sides, commercial Zirfon separator) showed voltage drift of 21 µV/hr. Before/after linear-sweep polarization curves differ by 30 mV at the operating point.

Is the electrode validated for renewable-coupled operation?

Yes. PV-irradiance-derived current schedules applied for 9 continuous days (peaks ~570 mA/cm²) and wind-variation-derived schedules for 100 hours (0 to 0.78 A/cm²) on the same cell. ΔV at 0.5 A/cm² before and after the 100-hour wind run: 20 mV.

What substrate sizes ship?

The bifunctional NiCo electrode is produced on Ni foam in the 100 to 1000 cm² size range. Bench-scale 5 cm² coupons matching the published test cell are also available so customers can reproduce numbers on their own rig before scaling up.
