Operating Temperature in Alkaline Electrolysis
The operating temperature of an alkaline electrolyser affects multiple parameters: electrolyte conductivity, reaction kinetics, material degradation rates, and gas solubility. Most modern AWE systems operate between 30–80°C, with the majority of commercial installations running in the 40–60°C range.
IONZERA is rated for continuous operation up to 45°C. While Zirfon PERL UTP 500 is rated to 110°C, this higher limit reflects its origins in legacy high-temperature electrolysis designs. For the vast majority of modern AWE installations, IONZERA's 45°C rating covers the actual operating conditions.
Optimized for Modern AWE, Not Legacy Systems
The trend in modern alkaline electrolysis is toward lower operating temperatures for several reasons:
Thermal Stability of PSU-TiO₂-GO Nanocomposite
Within its rated temperature range, IONZERA's PSU-TiO₂-GO nanocomposite exhibits excellent thermal stability. Polysulfone has a glass transition temperature well above 45°C, ensuring no softening or dimensional change. TiO₂ and GO are thermally stable inorganic materials unaffected by temperatures in this range. The membrane maintains its mechanical properties, pore structure, and electrochemical performance throughout the rated operating envelope.
