Why Shelf Life Matters for Industrial Membranes

Electrolyser manufacturing and hydrogen project development involve complex timelines. Membranes may be purchased weeks or months before they are installed in electrolyser stacks. During this time, the membrane must maintain its mechanical, chemical, and electrochemical properties. A membrane that degrades during storage would require just-in-time procurement, complicating supply chain logistics and increasing project risk.

IONZERA provides a 12-month shelf life when stored under recommended conditions, matching the industry-standard shelf life of Zirfon PERL UTP 500. This gives electrolyser manufacturers and project developers practical flexibility for inventory management and construction scheduling.

Storage Conditions and Handling

To achieve the full 12-month shelf life, IONZERA should be stored following recommended practices:

Store in original packaging at room temperature in a dry, clean environment
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or UV radiation during storage
Keep membrane sheets flat or loosely rolled to prevent creasing or mechanical damage
Inspect packaging integrity before use if stored for extended periods

Material Stability During Storage

IONZERA's shelf stability is a direct result of the inherent chemical stability of its constituent materials. Polysulfone is resistant to hydrolysis and oxidation under ambient conditions. TiO₂ nanoparticles are one of the most chemically stable ceramic materials known. Graphene oxide, while containing reactive functional groups, is stabilized within the PSU matrix and does not degrade under dry storage conditions. Together, these materials ensure that a membrane taken from inventory after 12 months performs identically to one used immediately after production.
