What Is Photocatalytic Anti-Degradation?
Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is one of the most well-studied photocatalytic materials. When exposed to UV light or certain wavelengths of visible light, TiO₂ generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) on its surface that can break down organic molecules. In the context of an AWE membrane, this photocatalytic activity serves a protective function — it can decompose organic contaminants that might otherwise accumulate on or within the membrane, degrading its performance over time.
IONZERA incorporates TiO₂ nanoparticles as an integral component of its PSU-TiO₂-GO nanocomposite. Beyond their photocatalytic function, these nanoparticles also contribute hydrophilicity, mechanical reinforcement, and chemical stability in concentrated KOH.

TiO₂'s photocatalytic properties provide several practical benefits for membrane longevity and maintenance:
TiO₂ vs ZrO₂: More Than Just a Ceramic Filler
Zirfon PERL uses ZrO₂ (zirconium dioxide) as its ceramic filler. ZrO₂ is chemically inert and hydrophilic — both desirable properties. However, ZrO₂ is a passive material: it does not actively protect the membrane or enhance ion transport beyond providing hydrophilic surfaces. TiO₂, by contrast, is an active material with photocatalytic functionality that provides ongoing protection throughout the membrane's lifetime. This is a meaningful differentiation in long-duration applications where membrane longevity directly affects total cost of ownership.
